The fate of HMAS Sydney (II), last sighted just before Christmas in 1941 following a battle with a German raider, has been Australia’s most enduring maritime mysteries. Then on 16 March 2009 her wreckage was discovered, resolving much of the 67-year-old uncertainty and controversy surrounding the disappearance of the ship and the 674 sons, husbands and fathers who were on board.
